Rhythm Sticks are so commonly used in primary music and after I struggled to find visuals for them, I decided to make my own. Primary singing time would not be the same without rhythm sticks! It’s so good to have the children actively engaged and moving their bodies! Plus it helps teach them rhythm and keeping a beat. So good for music!

I originally made the 1st group of visuals and later decided there was some more that I needed. So there are 2 groups of visuals with different rhythm sticks actions. So be sure to download them both!

If you’re unsure how to use rhythm sticks, check out Camille’s Primary Ideas or Sharla’s Dance methods for really great ideas! I bet you could find rhythm stick movements for every song taught in primary! This instrument is probably the most commonly used for primary and classrooms. And if you don’t find rhythms for the song you’re teaching, these visuals make it super easy to make up your own pattern. Start by giving each line in the song it’s own rhythm stick action. If a specific lines somewhat ties in with one of the actions, pair them together. For instance, if a line talks about praying, I might choose the action “Tap Your Knees” (for kneeling down to pray) or maybe the “Hold” action. You really can’t go wrong. If you don’t think of any relations, throw random actions in-it will be fine! Good luck!
